John Finney

John Thornley Finney (born 1 May 1932) was the eighth Suffragan Bishop of Pontefract.〔Crockfords On line- accessed 2 December 2008〕
He was educated at Charterhouse and Hertford College, Oxford.〔Who’s Who 2008 (London, A & C Black, 2008 ISBN 978-0-7136-8555-8〕 Ordained in 1958, he began his career with curacies in Headington and Aylesbury〔Crockford’s (Ibid)〕 and was then successively Rector of Tollerton, Vicar of St Margarets Aspley〔(Church details )〕 Adviser in Evangelism to the Bishop of Southwell and Nottingham and then Officer for the Decade of Evangelism before ascending to the Episcopate〔(Diocesan profile )〕 - a post he held from 1993 until 1998. An eminent author,〔Amongst others he wrote “Saints Alive!”, 1983; “Understanding Leadership”, 1989; “Recovering the Past: Celtic and Roman mission”, 1996; “Fading Splendour?”, 2000; and “Emerging Evangelism”, 2004 > British Library Web-site accessed 22 December 2008〕 in retirement he continues to minister, as an honorary assistant bishop within the Diocese of Southwell and Nottingham.
